Athens is the historical capital of Europe. Arts, philosophy and democracy were significantly developed during the period of 5th century BC. Explore the ancient sights and landmarks of Athens. Visit Acropolis, the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus and Plaka, one of the city's oldest neighborhood.
Located in Athens, Acropolis is one of the most fascinating world’s sights. Enjoy the panoramic view of Athens from the Temple of Parthenon, which was built between 447 BC and 438 BC. Acropolis reminds us the Athens glory during 5th century BC, which is also known as the “Golden Age of Pericles”. Here, you can also find the Erechtheion that is a complex of ancient sanctuaries. Look closely the popular six statues of maidens, known as Caryatids, which support the roof of the Erechtheion.
Another must-see attraction is the Acropolis Museum, the most well-known Athens museum that is constructed using glass and steel. Its modern design is so impressive. Here, there is a large exhibition of ancient monuments that were found in Acropolis, such as Moschophoros, Caryatids and Parthenon marbles.
A few-minute walk brings you to the ancient Agora, the center of everyday life in ancient Athens. Here, important events took place, such as the “Agora tou Dimou”. Walk in the Areopagus road and enjoy one of the most beautiful city’s routes. Close to Areopagus road, you will find the Odeon of Herodes Atticus that was built in honor of Herodes Atticus' wife, Regilla, in 161 A.D. Nowadays, live music concerts and theater performances are held at this theater.
Temple of Olympian Zeus, the largest temple in ancient Greece, was built between sixth century B.C. and second century A.D. The size of this temple is amazing. More than a hundred columns supported the grandiose sanctuary. Today, fifteen columns remain standing. Built around 335 B.C., another popular ancient monument is the Panathenaic Stadium with the 204-meter-long track. There were seats for 60,000 people. New marbles were added in the structure of the stadium during the Herodes Atticus era, 140 A.D. The Olympic Games were held at the Panathenaic Stadium in 1896.
A must-see site is the 19th-century building of the National Archaeological Museum. More than 11,000 exhibits are related with the history of the Greek civilization from the prehistoric period (6000 B.C.-1050 B.C.) to the Roman period.
Feel the vibrant atmosphere walking in the streets of Plaka, where historic churches, such as the Kapnikaréa church, have been constructed. In Plaka you can find plenty of Greek restaurants and you can taste traditional food dishes.
